Bacolod City ’s three Chinese Schools shone when they presented various cultural presentations during the opening of the 3rd Bacolaodiat Festival in celebration of the Chinese New Year last February 7, 2008 at the Chopstick Alley, 6th St. , Bacolod City.
The various presentations gave the Bacoleños a glimpse to the depth of Chinese culture, which dates back to thousands of years.
St. John’s Institute (Hua Ming) under Fr. Greg Fuentebella presented the Fan Dance and the Yoyo Dance. The SJI performers were composed of 3rd and 4th Year students, who were sent to Taiwan last summer 2007 to train in these Chinese cultural arts. The exchange study program was made possible through the support of Philippine Tycoon Lucio Tan and the Taiwanese Government. The SJI Dance Troupes were supervised by Sister Luisa Cheng, herself a native of Taiwan .
Bacolod Tay Tung High School (“Universal Cosmopolitan,” Founded 1934) took center stage with its Chinese Dance and Tamborine Dance Troupes. The BTTHS performers were composed of students from different grade and year levels and were trained by Victor Uy and supervised by Head of Student Affairs Rebecca Co in Saturday classes, which expose students to different aspects of the Chinese culture.
Trinity Christian School (a.k.a. Sam It, Founded 1976) performed the Spear Dance, the Flag Dance, and the Peacock Dance. The TCS Spear and Flag Dance performers were trained by a Taiwanese instructor and were later polished by Faculty Guat Ha Villanueva and Cherry Mae Tio while the Peacock Dancers were followed up by Faculty Gertie Cabrera. Principal of Trinity Christian School is Esther Jane Uy.
Members of the TCS Spear Dance and the Flag Dance Team include Ron Jacob Almaiz, Ralph Theodore Catalan, Cole Justin Chan, Tristan Von Daclan, Rose Jan Gensoli, Juan Paolo Kuan, Adrian Joshua Lamata, Miegel Carlo Pelongco, Ryle Asher Sian, Justin Vito Sy, John Klye Treyes, Aquile Verdadero and Alyssa Andrea Amador, Ma. Sofia Claudine Apuada, Erica Rose Chan, Liselle Lo, Kyle Anne Savaris, and Ayber Claris Sysiangco.
Other dances presented during the opening of the Chinese New Year include Hwa Chi, Mongolian Dance, Jie Geng Yao Dance, etc.
Meanwhile, a Grand Evening Lantern Parade moved from SM South Terminal and ending at 6th St . The parade featured the 12 animal signs in the Chinese astrological system in the form of illuminated floats. The 12 animals according to their order are Rat, Ox, Tiger, Cat, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.
According to Chinese legend, one day, Buddha felt that the Chinese nation needed some reorganization so on the occasion of the Chinese New Year, he called all the animals for a meeting. Only twelve arrived in the order mentioned above. Buddha honored these 12 animals by endowing each one of them a year of its own.
Each of the 12 animals has 5 manifestations based on the 5 elements of Chinese Cosmology (Water, Earth, Fire, Metal, and Wood). Thus, all 12 animals and their 5 manifestations can be completed within a 60 year period.
The parade also featured the expected Lion and Dragon Dances by the Chamber Volunteer Fire Brigade and Amity respectively, which bring good luck for the Chinese New Year.
The Lion Dance can trace its roots as far back as the Han Dynasty (206 B.C.-221 A.D.), by then still known as Chu Shou “Enormous Quadruped.” The Han Shu (History of the Han Dynasty) tells us tells us that Lion Dancing was already popular during the Han Dynasty and was depicted in murals and stone engravings. Lion Dancing was also mentioned during the South and North Dynasties (420-589 A.D.).
Lions are not indigenous to China so the real origin of the Lion Dance is not clear. There are many legends and myths of its origin. One dating from the Sung Dynasty states that a traveler informed the Chinese Emperor of a ferocious beast in a far away land. The Emperor commissioned his artists to do a replica based on the description given and the Lion Dance was born.
The Large Headed Buddha, according to legend, was sent by Buddha Sakyamuni to take care and watch over a Lion who was an adherent of Buddhism but failed in “awakening to the truth.”
The Chinese Dragon is an entirely different animal from the Lion. It is much longer and has a snake like body covered with scales with lizard like arms and legs which end in sharp claws. The dragon is usually seen chasing a pearl shaped like a ball handled by a bearer who leads the Dragon with its intricate movements.
Bacolaodiat is a contraction of Bacolod (derived from Buklod “ Hill ” ) and the Fookienese word Laodiat “Happy Celebration.” It was started by the city of Bacolod last 2005 based on a pattern used in Iloilo City . Bacolaodiat, Inc. was formed to professionalize the celebration.

The 2nd Brgy. Taloc Martial Arts Showdown was presented by the Original Filipino Tapado Long Stick Fighting Association (OFTLSFA), Inc. of 1st Generation Inheritor Grandmaster Benefredo “Bebing” M. Lobrido in cooperation with Brgy. Taloc Officials and the Intercontinental Federation of Filipino Martial Arts Schools (IFFMAS) of President Master Elmer V. Montoyo last February 10, 2008 at the Taloc Covered Gym, Brgy. Taloc, Bago City as part of the purok’s Annual Fiesta Celebration.

Deriada of Conceptual Martial Arts Society (CMAS), Inc. demonstrated an Arnis interactive ofensa defensa flow drill, Lapu-Lapu Viñas Arnis knife knife disarming and seated techniques, and Long Ying Quan double touch 2-man form.
Negros United Fighting Arts Academy (NUFAA) of Founder/Grandmaster Jose “Joe” Mancesa showcased the Alasabate Sciencia style of Arnis, which descended from the late Grandmaster Dominador Recto. Instructor Stevie John Doctora led 6 other members of NUFAA in performing whipping, siquete, valor, pang-agaw, sinawali, and other techniques of the style.
Tapondo International Federation Inc.-Bacolod/Negros (TIFI- Bacolod/Negros) of Master Roy R. Flores Sr. was represented by Jake A. Bugna, who presented various counters for hold up knifge threats as well as stabbing attacks with a blade.
Founder/Grandmaster Danilo “Danny” Cardinal, Master Instructor Bering Dajao, and Master Elizalde Aspan of KaliSilat Arnis Association (KAA) demonstrated likha anyo (creative forms) with solo and doble baston, tapi-tapi ofensa defensa, knife tapi-tapi, and disarming techniques with a stick and with the empty hands.
Master Elmer V. Montoyo, Founder/President of the Philippine Integrated Martial Arts Academy-Filipino Tang Soo Do Association (PIMAA-FTSDA), together with Foudner/Master Narciso “Hansy” L. Alojado of Conceptual Martial Arts Society (CMAS), Inc. demonstrated the 24-posture Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan to the tune of Once Upon A Time in China . CMAS Foudner/Master James U. Sy Jr., representing Master Montoyo’s PIMAA-FTSDA performed the Chinese empty hand form Kokusun, which is taught in Filipino Tang Soo Do.

Mamar in 1960 in Taloc, Bago City. Assisiting GM Lobrido were OFTLSFA VP/OFT Senior Instructor Jun-Jun Maravilla, OFT Senior Instructor Joeffrey S. Deriada, and Lorema “Bing” H. Tacsagon.
Special guests were Brgy. Taloc Secretary Hon. Ramon Espacio and Brgy. Taloc Kagawad Hon. Vicente Monteras Jr.
The demonstrating martial artists were treated with Taloc hospitality at the residence of Kagawad Hon. Muriel Carmona after the event.
The event was held by the Original Filipino Tapado Long Stick Fighting Association (OFTLSFA), Inc. to support the aim of the Intercontinental Federation of Filipino Martial Arts Schools (IFFMAS) to introduce the various indigenous Negrense martial arts and other related art forms to the new generation and to encourage them to study the martial arts, irregarless of which style they may chose.
After the Founder’s death in 2005, GM Lobrido was unanimously chosen by the Mamar Clan to take over as the Headmaster of the art his late uncle. Such wish by the family was carried out with the formal turnover performed by the son of late Founder, Romeo “Tokong” Mamar Jr., in a simple ceremony prior to the burial of GM Mamar (see http://oftlsfai.blogspot.com for the pictures and documentation of said turnover).
GM Lobrido, who served as the long time Chief Instructor of the association, strives to preserve the art he learned from his uncle. Original Filipino Tapado, as developed by the late Founder/Grandmaster Romeo “Nono” C. Mamar, was tested in actual unarmored combat against masters from other styles of Arnis. GM Lobrido teaches the same techniques his uncle used in these fights.

The Original Filipino Tapado Long Stick Fighting Association (OFTLSFA), Inc. will be holding the 2008 OFTLSFAI General Reunion this coming February 24, 2008 at the Lobrido Residence, Prk. Langka, Brgy. Taloc, Bago City .
Heading the celebration will be the late Founder’s nephew 1st Generation Inheritor/Grandmaster/President Benefredo “Bebing” M. Lobrido with the support of the Mamar and Lobrido Clans, association officers and old and new masters, instructors, and practitioners of the art. It will be the 3rd OFTLSFAI Reunion to be held under GM. Lobrido’s administration.
This year’s will mark the association’s 24th Year Anniversary, having been founded as the first and official governing body for Original Filipino Tapado, in 1984 in Bago City.
Original Filipino Tapado is the indigenous long stick fighting art founded by the late Founder/Grandmaster Romeo “Nono” C. Mamar in 1960 in Brgy. Taloc, Bago City after studying Lagas, Oido, Layaw, and Sinamak from 4 grandmasters. Tapado differs from other native or eclectic Negrense long stick fighting arts in that it only uses two kinds of strikes, albeit each one having its own hierarchical linya (line) from within characterizing dalum (depth) of technique. It is a single ended, stick-based, two handed grip art.
Tapado derives from the Hiligaynon term Tapat, which in turn comes from Tapos “Finish, End.” Contracting Tapat with the suffix do, one gets a descriptive term for the degree or gravity of being finished or put to an end. Thus, Tapado is an art designed to finish a conflict the soonest, 3 strikes maximum ideally.
One of the agendas is the election of the new set of association officers. GM Lobrido is the 4th president of OFTLSFAI, having served since 2005 up to the present. His uncle, GM Mamar, was the 3rd president, serving from 1989 to 2005.

GM Lobrido (B: 1950) started his studies of Lagas/Oido and then Original Filipino Tapado under his uncle GM Mamar in 1960, the year when OFT was perfected. For the next four decades, GM Lobrido became GM Mamar’s assistant and ultimately was designated as Chief Instructor when an organization was set up to govern the activities of the art. GM Lobrido personally handled instructions, especially when the Founder retired from teaching. Many renowned martial artists owe their OFT knowledge from GM Lobrido. To date, GM Lobrido has a total of 48 years experience in Tapado.
The most important achievement of the association under the leadership of GM Lobrido is the registration of the association with the Secutrities & Exchange commission (SEC) last December 16, 2005 (SEC registration No. CN200530787).
To date, two schools are affiliated with OFTLSFAI, namely the Philippine Integrated Martial Arts Academy-Filipino Tang Soo Do Association (PIMAA-FTSDA) of Master Elmer V. Montoyo and the Conceptual Martial Arts Society (CMAS), Inc. It also has individual members in Bacolod , Bago , California , Cebu City , Iloilo City , Kingston ( Canada ), Louisiana , San Carlos City , Talisay City , and Texas .

DUMOG IN ANTIQUE DOCUMENTED BY CMAS

Conceptual Martial Arts Society (CMAS), Inc., the premier martial arts research and documentation team in Western Visayas, traveled to Pojo, Bugasong, the province of Antique in Panay Island during the Feast of the Sto. Niño last January 18-19, 2008 to get a first have exposure to the indigenous Visayan grappling art of Dumog.
Host for the group was the Barte Family. The CMAS members included Chapter Head Dr. Raymund Antonio A. Maguad and his wife Dra. Saja Marie B. Maguad, Chapter Head Lafayette A. Diamante, and Instructress Lorema “Bing” H. Tacsagon.
The host introduced the group to Antonio Orendain, who grappled during his younger days. Orendain explained the traditional rules of Dumog, as it is played in Antique, one of a few places said to be the birthplace of Dumog. He showed the researchers several Dumog techniques that he learned from his father. He also showed some Eskrima techniques.
The CMAS trip to Antique was planned about a year earlier but had to be postponed because of its members’ professional commitments. Visayan Dumog, along with the Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) of Arnis/Eskrima, had become popular in American soil, however, foreigners still have a distorted view of what these arts really are. What is often called Dumog is actually repackaged Judo/Jujutsu (Japanese or Filipino variety), Silat, Western Wrestling, some other grappling art, or some techniques from other martial arts that are lumped as Dumog.
This confusion is partly due to the word itself. In common usage, the Hiligaynon word Dumog means “To Wrestle/Grapple” and the word can be applied to any form of clinching, holding, and throwing. But now with globalization and the various martial arts from different countries being introduced or reintroduced to the public, there is a need to define and differentiate the Visayan/Filipino Dumog to any form of grappling generically called Dumog. The generic term Dumog “To Wrestle/Grapple” can be applied to Kodokan Judo, Korean Cireum, or Chinese Shuai Chiao when referred to by Visayasn in their own language but do not constitute Vusayan/Antiqueño Dumog. Hence, the term Visayan/Antiqueño Dumog to differentiate a specific form of grappling art.
CMAS members originally picked up the Visayan/Antiqueño form of Dumog from Pastor Romeo N. Gumban, who was undefeated in Dumog competitions when he was still residing in Antique. Pastor Gumban is a member of the Original Filipino Tapado Long Stick Fighting Association (OFTLSFA), Inc. of Grandmaster Benefredo “Bebing” M. Lobrido, Philippine Integrated Martial Arts Academy-Filipino Tang Soo Do Association (PIMAA-FTSDA) of Master Elmer V. Montoyo, and Intercontinental Federation of Filipino Martial Arts Schools (IFFMAS) , organizations to which CMAS also belongs.
Conceptual Martial Arts Society (CMAS), Inc., the premier martial arts research and documentation team in Western Visayas, traveled to Pojo, Bugasong, the province of Antique in Panay Island during the Feast of the Sto. Niño last January 18-19, 2008 to get a first have exposure to the indigenous Visayan grappling art of Dumog.
Host for the group was the Barte Family. The CMAS members included Chapter Head Dr. Raymund Antonio A. Maguad and his wife Dra. Saja Marie B. Maguad, Chapter Head Lafayette A. Diamante, and Instructress Lorema “Bing” H. Tacsagon.
The host introduced the group to Antonio Orendain, who grappled during his younger days. Orendain explained the traditional rules of Dumog, as it is played in Antique, one of a few places said to be the birthplace of Dumog. He showed the researchers several Dumog techniques that he learned from his father. He also showed some Eskrima techniques.
The CMAS trip to Antique was planned about a year earlier but had to be postponed because of its members’ professional commitments. Visayan Dumog, along with the Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) of Arnis/Eskrima, had become popular in American soil, however, foreigners still have a distorted view of what these arts really are. What is often called Dumog is actually repackaged Judo/Jujutsu (Japanese or Filipino variety), Silat, Western Wrestling, some other grappling art, or some techniques from other martial arts that are lumped as Dumog.
This confusion is partly due to the word itself. In common usage, the Hiligaynon word Dumog means “To Wrestle/Grapple” and the word can be applied to any form of clinching, holding, and throwing. But now with globalization and the various martial arts from different countries being introduced or reintroduced to the public, there is a need to define and differentiate the Visayan/Filipino Dumog to any form of grappling generically called Dumog. The generic term Dumog “To Wrestle/Grapple” can be applied to Kodokan Judo, Korean Cireum, or Chinese Shuai Chiao when referred to by Visayasn in their own language but do not constitute Vusayan/Antiqueño Dumog. Hence, the term Visayan/Antiqueño Dumog to differentiate a specific form of grappling art.

YOUNG LIFE ARNIS EXAMS HELD

4 members of Young Life Philippines, Inc.-Bacolod Chapter took their first Arnis Evaluation Test last Janury 16, 2008 at the Young Life (YL) Center, A-1 Silos Apt., San Juan St., Bacolod City.
The examinees were Faciola Salome “Mimi” Mendoza, Doem Oguilla, John Armias, and Hannah Joy Apurillo. The Examiners, all coming from Conceptual Martial Arts Society (CMAS), Inc., were Founder James U. Sy Jr., Chapter Heads Dr. Raymund Antonio “Mund” A. Maguad and Lafayette “Laf” A. Diamante, and Instructress Lorema “Bing” H. Tacsagon.
The Arnis examinations were patterned after the format developed by Sy for the Lapu-Lapu Viñas Arnis Aficionados Association (LVAAA) and used by the LVAAA Examination Board, composed of 1st Generation Inheritor/Headmaster Wilson “Nonong” E. Viñas, the late Grandmaster Dominador “Doming” D. Ferrer, and Master Ferdinand Emmanuel “Bobot” Y. Gayoles, in two previous examination in 2005 and 2006.
The examinations consisted of pang-igo (Strikes 1-7), panagang (blocks 1-3), baston contra baston pang-agaw (disarms 1-2), kamot contra baston pang-agaw, and shadow stickfighting. About 60% of the materials included were derived from the Lapu-Lapu Viñas Arnis System.
A select few of YL members, among them YL-Bacolod Area Directress Estela “Telay” Hernandez, Mendoza, Oguilla, and Anabel Layahin, started their Arnis instruction under YL Volunteer Lafayette Diamante, RN, in November 2006 as one of the programs offered by YL-Bacolod to the youth. Tacsagon, who is Diamante’s student in CMAS-Red Cross/Doña Juliana, assisted Diamante in the instruction.
Diamante, a product of the University of St. La Salle , was a former Clinical Instructor at the west Negros College (WNC) and a former instructor at the Philippine National Red Cross-Bacolod Chapter (PNRC-Bacolod).
Young Life (YL) is an international non-stock, non-profit organization founded in 1971 and dedicated to the development of the youth and to introduce Chirst to them. Members are taught how to sing praise songs, play musical instruments, and other useful skills. In the Philippines , YL has several chapters, among them Bacolod , Cebu , Dumaguete, Lapu-Lapu, Palompon, and Toboso.
The Bacolod Chpater had held camps for a week for high school and college students and also gave leadership trainings and recollections. Door no. 1 of the Silos apartment is being paid for by volunteers to serve as a place to hangout by Young Lifers where they can learn from their ate and kuya.

HONG GETS TKD GOLD

Chris “Kenshi” Dave Siason Hong of Talaba-an, Brgy. Zone I, Cadiz City was crowned champion in his category during the 5th Masskara National Taekwondo tournament held recently at the Event Center , SM Bacolod, Reclamation Area, Bacolod City .
Hong, 6, won against Ricky Semillano of Phikoma before facing and then defeating Christian Cantor, also of Phikoma, in the championshiop round.
Hong is the son of Alexis G. Hong and Marie Josette Siason Hong and is a Kinder 2 student of PNUCECE. He started TKD during a summer sports clinic on July 27, 2007. His win brings his collection to 3 gold-1silver-1 bronze medals.
His competition record includes Bronze, 5th Silay Charter day Taekwondo Invitational competition (June 10, 2007, Natalio G. Velez Sports and Cultural Center ); Gold, 40th Cadiz City Charter Taekwondo Competition (July 1, 2007); Silver, 1st All BTA Taekwondo Championships (August 5, 2007, 2F Cineplex Bldg., Arantea St. , Bacolod City); and Gold,
1st Bacolod Taekwondo Association (BTA) Inter Club Taekwondo Invitational Tournament (September 16, 2007, Robinson’s Place, Bacolod City )
Meanwhile, consistent TKD gold medallist Frenzet Meliz D. Sumugat of Cadiz City, 9, also won the gold medal in her category by defeating an opponent from Cebu , Chan Martil of Kabnkalan, and Alemar of Negros Taekwondo Union-Tigers. Her brother, fredzir won against Ryan Belanio of Kabankalan but lost to John Cebustian of Ilog in his second fight.

SUMUGATS CONTINUE THEIR QUEST FOR EXCELLENCE

The Sumugat siblings are just like any other school children. What makes them special is their unending dedication to the martial sport of Taekwondo. Their latest competition outing was during the Gov. Niel Tupas Cup Invitational Taekwondo Tournament recently at the ISC Covered Court , Iloilo Sports Complex, Lapaz, Iloilo City .
Frenzet Meliz D. Sumugat, 9, of Phikoma Taekwondo ( Cadiz City ) defeated both Ronegrace Libalib of Iloilo and Andrea Rose Labaro to be crowned champion in her category. Her brother, Fredzir D. Sumugat, 7, won against his first opponent from Iloilo but succumbed to Chris Ryan Sanes, a blue belt from Phikoma, and settled for the silver medal in his category.
Junior black belt Junmar Pamaypay also got the gold in his category by disposing of Michael Anthony Despi of Iloilo City and John Paul Tayo of Roxcata in that order.
Frenzet was one of four players fielded by Cadiz West Elemnetary School (CWES) II (of District IV) during the Division Meet Taekwondo Competition held by the Department of Education (DepEd) last October 19, 2007 at Tiglawigan National High School . Frenzet (Grade IV) and May Rebada (Grade V) snatched the gold medals in their respective categories. The other two CWES II players were Fredzir Sumugat (Grade Grade II) and Gem Rbada (Grade III).
Frenzir also got the silver medal during the 1st Bacolod Taekwondo Association (BTA) Inter Club Taekwondo Invitational Tournament last September 16, 2007 at Robinson’s Place, Bacolod City .
The proud parents of the Sumugat TKD kids are Tapondo black belt Fred and Flora Mae d. Sumugat of Cadiz City. The Sumugat siblings began their TKD training under Coaches Dexter Chavez and Rodolfo Langoquit last July 22, 2006.
Meanwhile, the Cadiz City Government under the leadership of Hon. Mayor Salvador Escalante with SP members awarded Phikoma a Certificate of appreciation for its efforts in bagging Taekwondo medals for the City of Cadiz during the flag ceremony last Decmber 3, 2007 at the Cadiz City Hall.
