The Tribu Hangaway Philippines of Founder/Master Roy R. Flores, 6th Degree Black Belt, successfully held the 1st Muay Thai Negros Occidental Selection last January 22, 2012, Sunday, at the Atrium Area, Gaisano City Bacolod Supermall, Araneta St., Bacolod City.
Overall champion was Tribu Hangaway Philippines of Founder/Master Roy R. Flores with a win-lose slate of 3-2, followed by the Deftac Bacolod Fight Club of Chief Instructor Edwin J. Tusil (2-2) and the Black Falcon Martial Arts Association (BFMAA)-Main of Chief Instructor Joery C. Amante (1-2).
Demonstrations. The Renzoku Mart Arts Academy (RMAA) under Bert Ginete Sensei performed several kata (forms) from the Shotokan style of Karate. Those who demonstrated were medalists in the NOPSCEA Karate event: Lysterr Antiquiera, James defallo, Tsuki Defallo, Janreb Garbanzos, and Wesley Salvador.
The demo team of host Tribu Hangaway Philippines was led by Blackl belt Jimmy Soquiña in demonstrating the techniques of Aikido: Samurai walk, ukemi (breakfalling), self defense against cellphone snatching, women’s defense against two attackers, and other self defense techniques using jointlocks and throws.
Founder/Master James U. Sy Jr. of the Conceptual Martial Arts Society (CMAS), Inc. performed a blade based solo baston anyo (form). Sy also assisted P/Sgt. (Ret.) Grandmaster Estanislao “Eslao” T. Guarra, President of the Negros Occidental Baston Federation (NOBF) , in showcasing the punta y punta and sulab y sulab aspect of his Guarra Style Modern Arnis.
2011 Philippine National Games (PNG) silver medalists Michael Catalan (60 kg.) and Rosendo Trayco III (56 kg.) demonstrated the allowed and foul techniques in Muay Thai rules competition.
Results. The larger Joery “Jun-Jun” Amante Jr., 43 kg., of BFMAA-Main defeated Roy C. Flores Jr., 38 kg., of THP via retirement at 1.50 of the 3rd round. Arjay Flores, 47 kg., of THP beat Johnny Basico, 43 kg., of BFMAA-Main on points. Jason Framco, 54 kg., of THP won over Ejay Esmino, 53 kg., via unanimous decision.
The gargantum Marvin Marquez, 100 kg., of DBFC overpowered the more experience but much smaller Rosendo Trayco III , 58 kg., of BFMAA-Main via retirement at 1.11 of the 2nd round. Trayco had the heart but the power and weight of Marquez was just too much for him.
Brian Diaz, 67 kg., of TH, derfeated Francis Lamata, 65 kg., of DBFC, via unanimous decision. Kareem Feria, 80 kg., of DBFC won over Justin Tolentino, 83 kg., of THP via RSC-Injury at 0.21 of the 2nd round.
Winners of the tournament were qualified to compete in the Regionals this coming February in Iloilo.
