Gamboa Spearheads World Water Day Forum @ People’s House

Sy Jr./NDB photo). The World Water Day Forum was held by the Bacolod Water Consumers Watch Inc. under the chairmanship of Hon. Councilor Wilson “Jun” C. Gamboa Jr., the only accredited water consumer watchdog in the city, last March 22, 2016 at the 3/F MassKara Hall, People’s House, Bacolod City. World Water Day was set every March 22 by the UN General Assembly on December 22, 1992 and is observed annually with focus on the significance of freshwater and urgency for sustainable managmenet of water resources indicating a specific aspect each year. This year’s theme for the forum was “Better water, better jobs.” Hon. Councilor Wilson “Jun” C. Gamboa Jr., who is also the Chairman of the Committee on Environment and Ecology, gave the wecome message to about 150 attendees from different sectors, among them the water consumers, barangays, associations, businesses, academe, and water utility and related groups. Guest speaker was Engr. Mario Macatangay, General Manager of the Bacolod City Water District (BACIWA). Messages were also given by Antonio Camelo P. Tompar, Chairman of the Mactan Rock Industries, Inc.; Atty. Aida Torre, Chairman of of the Bacolod City Water District (BACIWA); and Ma. Luisa Parroco, General Secretary of the Bacolod Water Consumers Watch Inc. Proxies for Engr. Joan Nathaniel Gerangaya of the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) and Engr. Belly Aguillon, Bacolod City Engineer also gave messages in their behalf. Councilor gamboa presented the current status of the distribution of water pumps to the 61 barangays of Bacolod City. Hon. Bacolod City Mayor Monico O. Puentevella gave the inspirational message for the forum. Master of Ceremony was Gil Alfredo B. Severino, MA. The forum was very timely because the effects of the el niño is felt all over Bacolod and the Negros Island as wells go dry and water serice is often interrupted in the barangay level. This issue was the primary concern discussed during the open forum. Councilo Gamboa had previously authored City Ordinance No. 08-14-668, April 8, 2014, an ordinance creating ‘Bacolod City Water Supply and Quality Monitoring Council and providing funds therefor.” Another water-centered ordinance that the good councilor had proposedin the Sangguniang Panglungsod is “An ordinance establishing water conservation programs in Bacolod City.” Said ordinance was proposed this March 2016.

Franco, Rembulat Overwhelmingly Won as BCC SSG Pres, VP by James U. Sy Jr.

Reggie C. Franco garnered an overwhelmingly majority win, getting 43 of 52 (82.69%) of contested positions, with a perfect straight victory slate in the Sum-ag Ext., where the BSBE & BSIT Depts. are located. Bacolod City College (BCC) is one of only two public schools in Bacolod City to offer college education, the other being Carlos Hilado Memorial State Collge (CHMSC). Puentevella, helps qualified and deserving but indigent students to have a quality but affordable college education, with the ultimate goal of producing globally competitive graduates who can perform in the ever changing and dynamic market and economy. 2nd Mayor Ortiz SalBen Arnis Cup Held

Hon. Mayor Jose Max “Joemax” S. Ortiz presented the 2nd Salvador Benedicto Arnis Tournament “Mayor Jose Max ‘Joemax’ S. Ortiz S. Ortiz Cup” last February 9, 2016 at the Covered Court, Salvador Benedicto as part of the 33rd Founding Anniversary of the town and its 26th Kali-Kalihan Harvest Festival. The tournament was organized by the Bacolod-based Sungkudan International (SI)/Guinabo Arnis and Combat Sports (GACS) of Grandmaster Felix A. Guinabo. Founder/Chief Instructor Diomedes N. Mamugay represented San Carlos City with the four school-based Arnis clubs he heads, namely San Carlos Jungle Fighter Martial Arts Club (SACA JUFIMAC), Centralian Fighters Fighter Martial Arts Club (CEFIMAC), Ritarians Martial Arts Club (RMAC), and Thomasians Arnis Club CST-R (TAC). DEMONSTRATIONS. Members of SI/GACS gave solo and paired demonstrations of solo baston, doble baston, piga-piga espada y daga, and trangkada. Members of. Members of SACA JUFIMAC, TAC, and CEFIMAC, most of whom compete in DepEd sanctioned Arnis tournaments, performed an assortment of anyo. Senior Instructor Joseph Guevarra represented the Mandatusa Arnis Sikaran Kali (MASK) of grandmaster Romeo Postrano with a free flow solo baston form. Master James U. Sy Jr., Founder of Conceptual Martial Arts Society (CMAS), Inc., gave a non-choreographed form of the stick and the caburata and demonstrated empty handed knife defenses with the help of Senior Instructor Cyril Endonila of SI/GACS. Mamugay Promoted to Manunudlo II in Conceptual Arnis

Manunudlo II is so far the highest rank awarded by Sy in his system and Mamugay is the first to be so honored. Mamugay, who is one of the most active, if not the most active, instructors in San Carlos City, specializes in teaching school-based students and the out-of-school youth to channel their energies to more productive activities and discourage them in abusing prohibited drugs and engaging in other undesirable vices. He has and still teaches Karate, Sipa Sumbag (Kickboxing), Muay Thai, Western Boxing, Wushu Sanshou, Taekwondo, and Arnis. Currently he overseas and supervises the training of at least 100 students in 14 clubs: SACA JUFIMAC-Main, SACA JUFIMAC-Brgy. 6, SACA JUFIMAC-Brgy. Guadalupe, SACA JUFIMAC-Julio Ledesma National High School (JLNHS), Central Philippien State University-San Carlos Campus, Centralian Fighters Fighter Martial Arts Club (CEFIMAC), Ritarians Martial Arts Club (RMAC), Greenvillian Martial Arts Club (GMAC), Red Dragon Fighters (Calatrava), SACA JUFIMAC-Florentina Ledesma Elementary School Martial Arts Club, SACA JUFIMAC-Pontevedra, SACA JUFIMAC-Bacolod, Tañon College Arnis Club, and Thomasians Arnis Club of Colegio de Sto. Tomas-Recoletos. Mamugay is also ranked 3rd degree black belt in Combat Taekwondo under Modern Combat Taekwondo and 2nd degree black belt in Karate under the Golden Armor Karate-do International and NAJUKAJU-A. Mamugay started learning the Conceptual Arnis System on March 11, 2005 from Sy, every time he was in San Carlos for official business and was awarded by Sy his Manunudlo I rank in the system nearly 7 years later, on February 18, 2012 during the 2nd Hon. Mayor Ramon D. Torres Arnis Tournament on the occasion of the 46th Charter Day of Bago City. Mamugay has also taught barangay tanods, security guards, and students who became police officers. His team has represented San Carlos in tournaments in Bacolod, Bago, Canlaon, Escalante, Salvador Benedicto, and Victorias among others.

Arnis for Women’s Self Defense Seminar Held @ PAGCOR

Sy Jr./CMAS photo). The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), Casino Filipino Bacolod under Branch Manager Arthur O. Malatag organized the “Women’s Self Defense Seminar” for 15 of its employees on March 7-8, 2016, 2:00-4:00 PM, at the Kahirup Entertainment Center, Casino Filipino, Bacolod City in celebration of Women’s Month 2016. Featured instructors for the seminar were Master Maxwell J. Maun of the Herada Pigada Arnis, an employee of Casino Filipino Bacolod, and Master James U. Sy Jr., Founder of the Conceptual Arnis System and Full Time Instructor at Bacolod City College (BCC), with the assistance of BCC BSIT senior Kriska Joy Therese P. Jacinto. The seminar, which included both theory and hands on applications, introduced participants to the basic principles of self defense, awareness and avoidance, protective maneuvers against various forms of attacks on the streets such as grabs, hugs, knives, and guns, and the basic strikes, blocks, and grabs of Arnis. Officers of Casino Filipino Bacolod were in full support of the activity: Branch Manager Arthur O. Malatag, Assistant BM Raymund Aranda, Branch Legal Officer Atty. Lenon Corgos, Branch Senior Casino Relations Officer Daisy De La Rama, MWR Chairman Randy O. Chua, IT Supervisor Malou Lapore Francisco. It was the third Arnis seminar held by Casino Filipino Bacolod for its employees since 2011. The first workshop was a 30-session course for the employees’ health and wellness program which ran from August to October 2011, also conducted by Maun and Sy with Brian Baylon Sensie. The second workshop was the “Women’s Self Defense Seminar,” also held in celebration of Women’s Month, on March 12, 2013, was conducted by Sy with the assistance of his student Kimberly Longno.

Conceptual Arnis Seminar for Quad Media Presentation Held

Six Entrepreneurship 2B students of the Business Education Dept. (BSBE), Bacolod City College (BCC)-Sum-ag Ext. requested for and received instructions in Conceptual Arnis for their advertising quad media presentation for the subject Principles of Marketing (PriMark) under Mr. Carolino A. Gamlanga, Insturctor I. The workshop, dubbed as “Conceptual Arnis Seminar for Marketing Quad Media Presentation, was conducted by James U. Sy Jr., Founder/Master of Conceptual Martial Arts Society (CMAS), Inc., on March 3, 2016 at the Capitol Lagoon, Bacolod City. The BCCians were taught basic warming up exercises with the baston and the majority of the training focused on sinawali, the Arnis method of using double sticks. A total of 7 patterns were taken up including 2 and 4 counts, alternate and successive high and low strikes. To round up the training, otso-otso was taught for solo baston, the hand blade for knife defense, and the 1-count gun disarm. The group’s proposed business was Tumandok Self Defense Center, which will teach professionally among others Arnis as self defense. The students had to prepare ad copies for calling cards, flyers, posters and tarps, radio and video ads, and social media accounts. The seminar was to give them a basic understanding of the dynamics of the art to better articulate it in the ads. The training group, which was the first presentor for their class, was composed of Paula Grace Porras, Kim Solinap, Leonilyn Villafuerte, Jhoe Ann Sumadia, Rodelyn Sumogat, and Jheza B. Evangelista. The quad media presentation served as the subject’s final examination for the students and was an innovative way for students to have a hands-on application of what they have learned in theory, in consonance with the college’s mission of producing globally competitive graduates. The BSBE Dept. is headed by Mr. Felipe R. Chin Jr., CPA, MBA, and the Bacolod City College (BCC) is under the chairmanship of Hon. Bacolod City Mayor Monico O. Puentevella.

New MMS and JPES Officers of BCC Declared by James U. Sy Jr.

The election for the new set of officers of the Marketing Management Soceity (MMS) and the Junior Philippine Entreneurs Society (JPES) of the BSBE Dept. under Ptogram Coordinator (PC) Felipe R. Chin Jr., CPA, MBA, Bacolod City College (BCC) for SY 2016-2017 was successfully held last March 19, 2016. The newly elected MMS officers are Bladimer Panisa (President), Keith Anthony Tabligan (Internal VP), Precious Gamboa (External VP), Angelo Burgos (Secretary), Hermadith Diwatin (Treasurer), Rhea Mae Aragon (Auditor), Joniper Occianas and Rose Ann Jaleco (Business Managers), Alexandee Remada (PIO), Jebea Beatingco (MM 2A Representative), Ciarra Tupas (MM 2B Representative), May Antonette Bravo (MM 3A Representative), Ma Tita Armas (MM 4A Representative), and Kyle Paras (MM 4B Representative). The newly elected JPES officers are Denmark R. Reubal (President), Emil T. Sta. Rita (External VP), Chrsitine Magallanes (Secretary), Jean Ruth Teruel (Treasurer), Lorraine Leyte (Auditor), K|imberly Laresca (Business Manager), Deo Anthony Parar and Marilou Inson (PIO), Bernabe Juance (2nd Year Representative), Edbert Villas and Ray Carlo Britanico (3rd Year Representative), and James Casimero (4th Year Representative). Panisa became President of MMS after its leader Reggie C.Franco decided to run for Supreme Student Government (SSG) President under the SAVE Party, and won by a large margin, especially in the Sum-ag extension of BCC. Now on its 18th year, the Bacolod City College (BCC) continues to offer affordable and quality education to deserving but indigent youth. The local college had already produced thousands of graduates from its five departments: TEd, BSBE, BSOAD, BSIS/ACT, and BSIT. Under the chairmanship of Hon. Mayor Monico O. Puentevella, BCC continuously strive to upgrade its services to students to produce globally competitive graduates in the ever changing market.
