5TH REG’L TAPONDO COMPETITION SUCCESS PART I: HARMONY IN DIVERSITY By: James U. Sy Jr.

The 5th Negros Regional Tapondo Invitational Competition was successfully held by the Tapondo International Federation, Inc. (TIFI)-Bacolod Chapter under Negros Chief Instructor Roy R. Flores Sr. in cooperation with Gaisano City Bacolod Supermall and with the participation of 6 other chapters from Western Visayas and the support of 9 member-organizations of the Intercontinental Federation of Filipino Martial Arts Schools (IFFMAS) under President Master Elmer V. Montoyo and Negros Occidetal Baston Federation under President Atty. Grandmaster Marcelo C. Jalandoon last May 25, 2008 at the Food Court Area, Gaisano City Bacolod Supermall, Araneta St., Brgy. Singcang, Bacolod City .

The event was graced by participants, guests, and spectators from Bacolod , Bago, Escalante, Iloilo City , Sagay, San Carlos , Silay, and Toboso. The convergence of different groups from an assorted array of martial arts disciplines served to show to the public that martial artists can work together in harmony inspite of stylistic preferences and do a good job of educating the public of the character-building as well as other intrinsic benefits of the martial arts in general.

DEMONSTRATIONS. Master William “Boy” Bernas of Bernas Estokadas together with his assistant showed their Largo Mano (long hand) style of Arnis.

Instructor Alson Ahunin led TIFI-Bacolod in the demonstration of children’s self defense with the “Super Kids” summer class and the defenses against attacks and grabs by the teens’ and women’s class.

Founder/Grandmaster Felix A. Guinabo and his assistant Emmanuel Arendonn demonstrated the traiditonal Espada y Daga and Piga-Piga Trese Grabes System of the Guinabo Arnis and Combat Sports (GACS).

Chairman Abraham Ganzon Jr. and assistant Ramel Vallajera of F.I.G.H.T. (Filipino Integrated Guerilla Hand Tactics) went through a series of defenses against hold up situations using an eclectic synthesis of Aikido and other martial arts. The performance was the first punlic appearance of the group since its inception.

The Philippine Integrated Martial Arts Academy-Filipino Tang Soo Do Association (PIMAA-FTSDA) of Founder/Master Elmer V. Montoyo was represented by MI James U. Sy Jr. who performed a Sai interpretation of the Kokusun form.

Grandmaster Danilo “Danny” Cardinal and MI Guilberto Dajao of the KaliSilat Arnis Association (KAA) performed a Likha Anyo based on Arnis Philippines (ArPi) standards and a two-man interactive flow form using tapi-tapi, disarming, and finishing.

Foudner/Chief Instructor Maxwell “Max” J. Maun of the Bacolod Aikido Enthusiasts (BAE)/Herada Pigada showed the kansetsu waza (joint techniques) and nage waza (projection techniques) of traditional Aikido. Founder James U. Sy Jr. of Conceptual Martial Arts Society (CMAS), Inc. assisted Maun Sensei.

Founder Narciso “Hansy” L. Alojado of Conceptual Martial Arts Society (CMAS), Inc. performed the 27-step form of Tai Chi Chuan. Later in the event, Bernas did another Tai Chi form, the 42 steps competition form.

TIFI Negros Chief Instructor Roy R. Flores Sr. did the final demonstration with a showcase of empty hands vs the knife and knife vs knife as well as the various locking and throwing techniques of Tapondo.
