3rd Death Anniversary of GM Doming Ferrer (1920-2007) Remembered by: James U. Sy Jr.

July 17, 2010 marked the 3rd year death anniversary of Grandmaster Dominador “Doming” D. Ferrer of Bacolod City (1921-2007). This piece is in memory of his legacy in the world of Arnis.

GM Ferrer was well respected by the martial arts community and the public not just because of his skills but more importantly because of his personality as a compassionate husband, father, friend, and teacher. He exemplified the ideal martial artist. He was a deeply religious man, always humble, respected all arts and practitioners, and always gave credit to his teachers.

Ferrer started his martial arts studies with Lapu-Lapu Viñas Arnis under its Founder, the late Grandmaster Jose “Joe” L. Viñas (1906-1991) in October 1959 and was awarded his mastership on April 20, 1979, only after 20 years of continuous practice. Master Ferrer was recognized as a Grandmaster by the Negros Occidental Arnis Federation (NOAF) during the 4th National Arnis Tournament and Festival on July 26-27, 1986 at the West Negros College Gym in Bacolod City.

On December 30, 2003, the son of the Founder, 1st Generation Inheritor/Headmaster Wilson “Nonong” E. Viñas, conferred to GM Ferrer a 10th Degree Grandmaster ranking in Lapu-Lapu Viñas Arnis, making him the first to be promoted to such high rank by a lineage holder. GM Ferrer’s rank is recognized by the Negros Occidental Baston Federation (NOBF) of Founder/President Atty. Col. Grandmaster Marcelo C. Jalandoon, Ph.D., and the Intercontinental Federation of Filipino Martial Arts Schools (IFFMAS) under its President Grandmaster Elmer V. Montoyo. He holds the distinction as the oldest living grandmaster of the Lapu-Lapu Viñas Arnis System in the world before he dies at age 86.

GM Ferrer may well also be the oldest Instructor of Original Filipino Tapado in the world before he died. He studied under the late Founder/Grandmaster Romeo “Nono C. Mamar of Taloc, Bago City, in the latter half of the 1980s and was conferred his Junior Instructor rank in Original Filipino Tapado on December 30, 1988 and his Senior Instructor Degree on May 28, 1989 by GM Mamar.

GM Ferrer founded his won school, the Kalantiaw Defense Society (KDS), only after GM Viñas passed away in 1991. GM Ferrer taught Old Style Lapu-Lapu Viñas Arnis, characterized by a left side lead and a general absence of a numbered or named patterns. He taught Arnis publicly but carefully chose his students and made them vow not to use their skills for anything other than for the protection of one’s life and one’s loved ones.

GM Ferrer served as Arnis Training Director for Bantay Bayan under Regional Director Rudy Toledo. At a certain point in time, he had also taught hand to hand defensive tactics to the Philippine Army in Negros. He was a Council of Elders member of Conceptual Martial Arts Society (CMAS), Inc., IFFMAS, and Lapu-Lapu Viñas Arnis Aficionados Association (LVAAA) and was a Board Director for NOBF and Original Filipino Tapado Long Stick Fighting Association (OFTLSFA), Inc.

GM Ferrer was a part of the guerilla movement in Negros under Lt. Liberato Montañes, Lt. Agustin Paraiso, and Lt. Lorenzo Dilag during World War II.

1st Arjuka Promotion Made by: James U. Sy Jr.

BAGO ARNISADORS (from left): P/Sgt. (Ret.) Founder/Grandmaster Estanislao "Eslao" T. Guarra of Guarra Style Modern Arnis, newly promoted Master Dexter F. Guarra, and his father Founder/Grandmaster Isaac "Saac" T. Guarra of Arjuka (James U. sy Jr./CMAS Photo).

Master Dexter F. Guarra of Bago City performs a Sinawali (Double Stick) routine from his father's Arjuka system (James U. sy Jr./CMAS Photo).
Founder/Grandmaster Isaac “Saac” T. Guarra recognized his son Dexter F. Guarra as a master of his style, Arjuka, with the affirmation of his elder brother, P/Sgt. (Ret.) Grandmaster Estanislao “Eslao” T. Guarra, Founder of the Guarra Style Modern Arnis, last July 18, 2010 at Brgy. Malingin, Bago City. It was the first formal rank promotion to be awarded in GM Guarra’s Arjuka style.

This came after a day long activity which involved a despidida gathering for the new master who is a seaman by profession, a review of Arnis Philippines International Rules for trainee referee and judges for the younger ranks of the Guarra Clan with actual bouts played, Arnis exhibitions by host Arjuka-Malingin, and exchange of ideas and instructions by both hosts and guests of the event.

During the exhibitions, youngster members of the Guarra Clan performed Sinawali two man drills, disarming techniques, and empty handed combat with the use of throws and close in striking.

Master Dexter Guarra demonstrated the nunchaku and then the solo Sinawali of Arjuka. Lastly, GM Isaac Guarra attacked him with strikes which he defended using his Solo Baston.

GM Isaac Guarra is the only arnisador to have been recorded to demonstrate the nunchaku in public during the first decade of the 2000’s.

Dexter Guarra started training under his father in 1979, when he was 5 years old. All seven siblings were trained by GM Isaac Guarra in his Arjuka style, which he founded back in 1972.

Arjuka is the contraction of Arnis, Judo, and Karate. During the 1960s and early 1970s, Karate peaked in popularity in the Philippines with many Filipinos practicing the art. Karatekas the likes of Roberto Gonzales, Johnny Caranza, and Tony Ferrer smashed the cinema box office during those times.

GM Isaac Guarra learned his techniques from a friend and later he developed it into his own style which blended aspects of the three aforementioned arts. Just like other Arnis systems, Arjuka fundamentals start with triangle footwork and the Abecedario or the 12 basic strikes. The 12 basic strikes of Arjuka traces its roots from the Herada Redoble, an Espada y Daga style, which GM Guarra learned from his late father Grandmaster Cornelio “Kune” Guarra.

Arjuka emphasizes training methods which develop the grip strength such as raising a steel bar holding it at only one end and twirling a heavy piece of metal in one hand and not dropping it. Other training practices include piercing a banana tree with a kick.

Dexter Guarra, a product of the Visayan Maritime Academy, was doing demonstrations with his father and siblings at a very young age, from Bago to the Bacolod Arts and Youth Sports (BAYS) Center and La Salle in Bacolod. His promotion to master by his father is long overdue, only after 31 years of training.

Arnis Philippines Officiating Review Held in Bago by: James U. Sy Jr.

Members of the Guarra Style Modern Arnis and Arjuka-Malingin pose with host and guest masters and grandmasters during the despidida gathering for Master Dexter F. Guarra last July 18, 2010 at Brgy. malingin, Bago City (James U. sy Jr./CMAS Photo).

Actual hands on training for Arnis Philippines official-trainees under the supervision of Bacolod/Negros Occidental CommissionerGrandmaster Danilo "Danny" L. Cardinal held last July 18, 2010 at Brgy. malingin, Bago City (James U. sy Jr./CMAS Photo).
After a successful Arnis Philippines Referee and Judges Officiating Echo Seminar on July 3-4, 2010 at Brgy. Lag-asan, Arjuka-Malingin of Founder/Grandmaster Isaac “Saac” T. Guarra hosted his brother P/Sgt. (Ret.) Grandmaster Estanislao “Eslao” T. Guarra, Founder of the Guarra Style Modern Arnis and current President of the Negros Occidental Baston Federation (NOBF), and officials from Arnis Philippines-Bacolod/Negros Occidental Chapter headed by Commissioner Grandmaster Danilo “Danny” L. Cardinal for a review of sport Arnis officiating last July 18, 2010 at Brgy. Malingin, Bago City.

Other guests include Founder/Master James U. Sy Jr., Master Joeffrey S. Deriada, and Instructor Moises “Jung-Jung” Nifras Jr. of Conceptual Martial Arts Society (CMAS), Inc., Founder/Chairman Abraham “Abe” Ganzon Jr. of Universal Defensive Tactics Academy (UDTA), and Master Guilberto Dajao of KaliSilat Arnis Association (KAA).

GM Isaac Guarra and his family treated the guests to a filling breakfast and lunch, which was a despidida get together for his son, Master Dexter F. Guarra, a seaman, who is set to leave for Manila this coming July 25, 2010.

Six teenage members of the Guarra Clan, who are all Arnis practitioners, participated in the review. They were Filton O. Bernadas, Jonar D. Guarra, John Rey C. Montes, Ceasar Ian G. Poral, Windy Lou G. Poral, and Louie A. Terante.

GM Cardinal led the officials-trainee in going through the various commands, hand signals, and gestures for referees and scoring method of judges as used by Arnis Philippines and the International Arnis Federation, the world governing body for sport Arnis.

The second half of the review involved four actual bouts of three rounds each where the trainees were given hands on practicum on refereeing the bouts. The other trainees were either assigned as judges or timers. Dajao and Ganzon guided the judges in keeping track of the scores and the proper use of the red and blue flags for announcing the winner. Members of the Guarra Clan in the compound gathered and cheered the fighters.

The review is a preparation for the upcoming event, the 1st GSMASDA-Arjuka-CMAS Arnis Expo & Tournament, mulled for August 1, 2010 at the Gaisano City Bacolod Supermall.

Original Filipino Tapado Inheritor Turns 60 By: James U. Sy Jr.

Grandmaster Benefredo “Bebing” M. Lobrido, 1st Generation Inheritor of Original Filipino Tapado (OFT), demonstrates a direct hitting technique on Master Narciso "Hansy" L. Alojado.

Grandmaster Benefredo “Bebing” M. Lobrido ang Tig-subli (1st Generation Inheritor) sang Original Filipino Tapado (OFT), celebrated his 60th birthday through a simple luncheon gathering together with his family and a few of his students last June 28, 2009 at the Paraiso Beach, Brgy. Pta. Taytay, Bacolod City.

The birthday celebration also marked GM Lobrido’s 50th year of continuous study and teaching of Original Filipino Tapado (OFT), an indigenous long stick fighting art founded by his late uncle Grandmaster Romeo “Nono” C. Mamar in 1960 in Prk. Langka, Brgy. Taloc, Bago City.

Lobrido started the study of the Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) in 1960, when he was 10 years old. He had four teachers with whom he learned from at about the same time. From Juan aguilar of Panay he learned Solo Baston (Herada Batangueña, Frances, etc.), Doble Baston, Espada y Daga, Pangamut. Teo Aguilar would visit the Lobrido residence every December and stay there for a month. While there he trained the young Lobrido.

Lobrido already studied the Methodo kind of Arnis from his grandfather, Benjamin Baylon of brgy. Ma-ao, Bago City. He learned the 12 strikes, 12 blocks, etc. common in all systems of Arnis.

His third teacher was Agustin Jalandoon, a student of Grandmaster Abraham Gubaton. Jalanddon taught Lobrido's father, Florencio, Lagas, a style of arnis that seems to be the forerunner of Oido de Caburata. The young Lobrido studies with Jalandoon after he is through with the elder Lobrido.

Lobrido's last and most influential teacher was GM Mamar. GM Mamar himself studied different systems of Arnis from four grandmasters. He evolved the Lagas/Oido he learned to come up with his Original Filipino Tapado (OFT). Lobrido started his studies with his uncle in 1960, the same year Tapado was founded. By his early teens, he was already assisting his uncle in teaching students.

As customary in those times, GM Mamar's Original Filipino Tapado (OFT) was put to the test in countless unprotected full contact challenge matches with masters of different styles. GM Mamar remained undefeated up to his death. In several instances, GM Lobrido engaged in these challenge matches in behalf of GM Mamar.

GM Mamar had designated Lobrido the Chief Instructor of his art with the rank of Master even before it was introduced and taught publicly. Upon the founding of the Original Filipino Tapado Long Stick Fighting Association (OFTLSFA), Master Lobrido was officially designated as Chief Instructor and second only to GM Mamar. He taught almost all of the beginning students. It was also common for students to undergo training under the Founder’s cousin Nelson Carmona of Bacolod (now himself a grandmaster) and his relative Joe A. Pamilangco of Bago (Master under GM Mamar).

The Mamar Clan formally turned over the headmastership of Original Filipino Tapado to GM Lobrido, during a simple ceremony at the funeral rites of the late Founder in February 2005 (see turnover pictures at http://oftlsfai.blogspot.com).

GM Lobrido had been featured in the cover page of Rapid Journal, the Philippines’ one and only and longest running martial arts magazine, as well as in articles in several of its issues. He was also featured in a special edition of FMA Digest by Punong Guro Steven K. Dowd of Aguillon Arnis, the official publication of the University of St. La Salle (USLS) The Spectrum, Mag TV na Amiga! at ABS-CBN (two times), and various daily and weekly newspapers in Western Visayas.

Oldest Tai Chi Group in Ba-Neg Turns 10 by: James U. Sy Jr.

Master Li Jun-Feng watches Peter Yap as he practices his Tai Chi form.

The Tai Chi Circle of Bacolod (TCCB) during its first year anniversary.

The Tai Chi Circle of Bacolod (TCCB), a non-profit, non-competitive network of career professionals/business people dedicated to the serious study of the internal Chinese Martial Art (CMA) "Grand Ultimate Fist," will be turning 10 this coming July 17, 2010, earning for itself the distinction as the oldest recorded existing Tai Chi Chuan group in Bacolod City and Negros Occidental.

Tai Chi Circle of Bacolod (TCCB) is headed by Founder/Teacher Peter John Lloren Yap Yan-Lin (B: 1944), the son of Ramon Yap Tian See of Lam Wah, Fujian, China.

The first practitioners of Tai Chi Chuan in Negros were obviously the Chinese who came to the island primarily as merchants and/or laborers. Unfortunately, there are no records of who these individuals were since the Chinese were very secretive, especially with their martial arts. What is known, however, is that early Chinese settlers of Negros, just like most other Chinese migrants in the archipelago, came from Fujian Province, Mainland China and spoke the Hokkien dialect.

Upon the founding of the Wushu Federation of the Philippines (WFP) in Binondo, Manila in the 1980s, Tai Chi Chuan was introdued to the public in a wider scale.

Then in 1992, Cecil H. Magsaysay sponsored Kung Fu action star and real life Chinese Martial Arts and Qigong Master Li Jun-Feng to teach the Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan simplified 24 posture form in Bacolod for a month. Master Li was the Head Coach of the Beijing Wushu Association and Counsel of the Research Committee of Chinese Qigong. Master Li learned Chi Kung Qigong from the mystic Master Gong Zhang. The following year, Master Li returned to Bacolod for another teaching stint for the 42 steps form.

Yap Sifu was among those who learned from Master Li. He was invited by Master Li to his apartment for more concentrated training aside from the regular mass training and did daily training under Master Li. Yap had studied a modified 108 posture form from a local Tai Chi Chuan master in Bacolod prior to studying under Master Li.

In 2000, several Tai Chi Chuan enthusiasts invited Yap to teach them. At first Yap refused because he was just doing Tai Chi for his own health. Later, Yap accepted under the condition that no fees will be collected from the members. Yap Sifu put the group to order and the training started.

Tai Chi Chuan is a manifestation of the equilibrium in the universe through the harmonization of the opposite yet complmentary metaphysical forces Ying and Yang. This flux and continuing harmonization is represented by the circle in Chinese cosmology. Thus, the name Tai Chi Circle of Bacolod (TCCB) is an apt name for a group whose goal is to harmonize and balance their lives.

Although Tai Chi was originally develop[ed as a fighting art, the primary objective of TCCB is self healing by cultivating the mind and inner peace, correct breathing, non-impact/non-injurious physical exercise through the forms, proper diet, and health centered lifestyle. Modern society’s stress-intensive lifestyle is an equally pressing concern. Without health, living becomes uneasy and burdensome.

For Yap Sifu learning is a life long pursuit, especially the study of Tai Chi; You only stop learning when you are dead. TCCB’s focus is primarily on the teachings of the late Grandmaster Cheng Man-Ching.

TCCB members have sworn on the benefits they have reaped from tai Chi training. According to Guillermo "Bill" Gomez, who started martial arts with the hard style of Karate, Tai Chi training has helped him take control of his diabetes. Jose Uy Jr. reports an energetic well being and inner peace inspite of the stresses of work.

During the first decade of the 2000's a few Tai Chi groups have emerged. TCCB, however, distinguishes itself in at least four respects: 1) It is the oldest existing documented group of Tai Chi Chuan practitioners in Bacolod City and Negros; 2) It is the only group in the city and province at this time to practice the classic Cheng Man-Ching 37 postures and the classic Yang Chen-Fu 108 postures, in addition to the Beijing 24 postures; 3) Its System of teaching and training Paradigm is based on scientific and natural principles as opposed to mysticism to help its members comprehend the art faster and clearer; 4) Training is focused on self healing and wellness as opposed to sport competition or fighting; and 5) Free instruction to all those who are interested.

TCCB came to the attention of the public on March 31, 2004 when Atty. Juanito S. Amihan, himself a martial arts enthusiast, hosted Yap Sifu for his TV show Reflections over at Negros Progress Channel. The group’s first public demonstration was during the 2nd Bacolaodiat Celebration last February 27, 2007 at the Bacolod Public Plaza where Humberto “Toti” Lim and Cathy Friend performed the 37 and 27 posture Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan form.

Currect members include Archie Acuña, Atty. Alexander Ang, Charles Atas, Andy Benedicto, Pepe Chiu, Eugene "Bonle" Flores Jr., Cathy Friend, Atanascio "Nonoy" Gargalicano, Guillermo “Bill” Gomez, Ianna Gomez, Bob Jereza, Paul Jison, Pepito Khey, Bing Lim, Humberto “Toti” Lim Jr., Albino Pasilan, Atty. Celedenio Perez Jr., Jose Uy Jr., and Stephen Young.

TCCB is greatly indebted to Mr. Mariano Cua who offered his place for the group‘s training. Interested parties may contact Mr. Jose Uy Jr. at 434-7664 or visit during practice every MWF 8:00 P.M. at Oceanlight Import and Export, Magsaysay St., Bacolod City.

Part I: The Passing of a Teacher

Patricio P. Prologo Sensei, Founder of Caltex Judo Club (CJC), Shinsei Judo Club (SJC), and Shinsei Aikido Society (SAS), passed away peacefully in his sleep last July 2, 2010, 12:15 NN, Friday, at the Prologo Residence, Bangga Riles, Prk. Maanyag 2, Brgy. Alijis, Bacolod City. He was 73.

Sensei Pat, as he is lovingly called by his students in the martial arts, retired from active teaching in 2008 when he was hit by a debilitating disease which his doctor can only name as a degenerative disease. His hands were trembling, he can not sleep, and lost a lot of weight. Medical tests can not show anything wrong with him.

A second opinion from another doctor hypothesized that he had previously experienced a mild stroke without him knowing it. Prologo, who was very active in sports and martial arts, had always refused to believe that he can become sick. Thus, this probable mild stroke could have gone unnoticed. A clue that the doctor based his hypothesis on was when Prologo Sensei experienced a degree of paralysis in his left hand in the final years of his life.

Last May 23, 2010, some pioneer members of the Shinsei Aikido Society (SAS) visited Prologo Sensei at his home. Pastor Roger Rementas offered to pray over him and Winston Que had tried pranic healing on him. Those who visited Prologo Sensei that day were Bro. Frank Boyero, Hope Canlas, Jacqueline Doromal, Edgar Go, Richard Limuaco, Winston Que, Pastor Roger Rementas, and James U. Sy Jr. Victorio C. Perez had also come to visit.

The last visit of his students to Prologo Sensei was on June 27, 2010. Those who visited were Bernie Bellen, Hope Canlas, Jacqueline Doromal, Edgar Go, Richard Limuaco, Roger Lucina, Jojo Palomar, and Winston Que.

On that fateful day, Prologo Sensei told his wife, Ma. Losie Hontiveros, that he will take a rest because he was very tired. When his wife and daughter were cleaning him up, Prologo raised both arms while still lying down. He breathed his last as he lowered his arms to his center. His family tried to revive him but to no avail.

Although grieving, the Prologo family found solace in the fact that Prologo Sensei passed away peacefully in his sleep and not having endured any traumatic seizures that is so common among dying people.

True to his passion in the martial arts, he had instructed his wife when he was still alive that when he dies, he wants to be buried wearing his Aikido gi “uniform” and hakama “pleated skirt (Nihonggo).” That was how he wanted to be remembered by those he left behind. A few days before his demise, Prologo Sensei even asked his wife if she had already washed his uniform. The Prologo family followed his wishes and had him wear his Aikido gi during the wake. Three pictures of him in his Aikido uniform were also displayed atop his casket.

Prologo Sensei’s body now lies at the Alsibo Memorial Chapels, Inc., Lacson-Burgos Sts., Bacolod City. Internment is tentatively scheduled for July 14, 2010 at the Rolling Hills Memorial Park.

Part II: The Genesis

Patricio “Pat” Pan Prologo (1936-2010), one of the pioneers of Judo and Aikido in Bacolod City, was born on August 15, 1936 in San Miguel, Iloilo to Federico Prologo and Prescilla Pan as the second of five children.

Prologo was a product of Bacolod City National High School (BCNHS), where he was a band member and a runner. In college, he went to the Central Philippine University (CPU) but later transferred to Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod (CSA-B), where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1972.

He married his neighbor Ma. Losie Hontiveros in 1962. Honteveros is the first cousin of journalist Jose Gregorio Hontiveros of the Philippine Free Press and a second cousin of 2010 Philippine Elections senatorial candidate Rizza Hontiveros. The couple has been gifted with five children: Ma. Sophie Prologo, formerly employed with the Civil Registrar’s Office; Patricio H. Prologo Jr., cock breeder; Staff Sgt. Gunji H. Prologo, Philippine Army (PA); Ma. Kristine Prologo, medical/legal transcriptionist; and 1st Lt. Naomi Prologo-Braza, Philippine Army (PA).

According to his wife, Prologo Sensei started his studies of the martial arts while he was in high school. Using Prologo Sensei’s birthday as the base, this could be worked back to anywhere from 1948 to 1952 more or less. Prologo, a bodybuilding enthusiast, was crowned Mr. Bacolod in 1957.

Prologo, while in college, practiced Judo. He was then a working student which gave him the opportunity to organize the Caltex (Bacolod) Judo Club in 1960 at his workplace at Caltex in Banago, Bacolod City. The instructor was Ignacio Ibisa Sensei and the club was affiliated with the Philippine Amateur Judo Association (PAJA), the sole recognized National Sport Association (NSA) for Judo by the Philippine Government. Prologo was a Depot Supervisor at the petroleum company.

By 1963, Anong Javellana was one of the technical advisers of Prologo’s group. Pat Prologo, his brother George P. Prologo, and Rene F. Cornel (1951-2000) were students of Anong Javellana Sensei in Judo. Prologo started his studies of Aikido under Javellana Sensei in Hda. Luisa in Bago City while he was with Caltex Bacolod. Prologo also studied Arnis from Javellana. His learnigns from him became the basic of his own system of Prologo Style Traditional Philippine Dynamic Arnis.

Javellana went to Mapua Institute of Technology where his best friend Vivencio “Ben” Ticao Sr. of Oton (B: 1926) was also enrolled. Judo, as taught by the Kodokan, was introduced to the Philippines by some Japanese businessmen in the mid to late 1930's. Among the places where Judo was taught was the Mapua Institute of Technology at Doroteo Jose St., Sta. Cruz, Manila.

Ticao and Javellana met at the Mapua Judo Club (founded 1950) and competed in PAJA-sponsored tournaments. Ticao was crowned All Philippine Judo champion sometime in the 1950's. It was from Ticao that Javellana learned his Aikido and later taught it to Prologo.

Engr. Ticao, upon graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 1952, taught Judo to various schools for two and a half years. It was during this time when he got acquainted with National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Lt. Col. Jose G. Lukban. Lt. Col. Lukban and several Judo black belts, among them Engr. Ticao, founded the Philippine Amateur Judo Association (PAJA, renamed to All Philippine Judo Federation in 2003 and Philippine Judo Federation in 2008) in 1954 and later organized it in September 1955. PAJA was affiliated with the International Judo Federation (IJF) in 1956. Ticao taught and was made Adviser to the NBI.

In 1957, Engr. Ticao was hired by Morrison Knudsen and Co. as a Project Inspector for the US Navy in Guam. While there he enrolled at an Aikido club headed by Harry Ito Sensei, the Guam Aikido Club. It was here where another Philippine Aikido pioneer, Francisco P. Valencia (1922-2006) of Iloilo, also a judoka, studied Aikido as well as Benjamin G. Galarpe, the future Organizer of the Manila Aikido Club and who taught Ambrosio “Monching” Gavileño of Guimaras, the future Founder/Master of Combat Aikido/Tapondo.

Anong Javellana later joined the Guam Aikido Club and according to Valencia Sensei, was given a brown belt cross rank in Aikido in recognition of his standing in Judo. Not long after Javellana had to go back to the Philippines.

Engr. Ticao assisted Ito Sensei in conducting classes. Tohei, Koichi Sensei (B: 1920), then the Chief Instructor of Aikikai Hombu in Tokyo, Japan, under Aikido Founder Ueshiba, Morihei O’Sensei (1883-1969), visited the club periodically and oversaw promotions. When Ito Sensei left for Japan, he left the care of the club to Engr. Ticao Sensei. When Engr. Ticao Sensei returned to Iloilo in 1966, he turned over the instructorship of the club to Valencia Sensei, then 1st Dan Aikido (promoted to 2nd Dan in 1967).

The International Judo Federation (IJF) honored Engr. Ticao Sensei with a 6th Dan Black Belt in Judo in recognition of his efforts in his dedication to PAJA and propagation of the art and as one of the Founding Members of the Association.

Based on research, interviews, cross referencing, and documentation, it can be pieced together that Harry Ito Sensei as Dojo Cho (Chief Instructor) taught Engr. Vivencio “Ben” Ticao Sr. (B: 1926) and Francisco P. Valencia (1922-2006). Engr. Ticao, as the Assistant Instructor, had also taught his junior Valencia.

Unfortunately there is no available data at the moment on what year Javellana Sensei joined the club or returned to the Philippines so it is not clear if he studied under Ito Sensei, Ticao Sensei, Valencia Sensei, or a combination of any of the three. But what is certain is, his Aikido, which he ultimately passed on to Patricio "Pat" P. Prologo, was descended from the Guam Aikido Club and that these men were bonded by their same background in Judo.

Part III: Prologo Sensei’s Groups

Prologo Sensei’s Judo group later transferred from Caltex to the Paglaum Sports Complex. According to Felix Altarap, Prologo Sensei started teaching basic Aikido to his advanced Judo students when the group was already based at the sports complex. Aikido training was Saturday afternoons while Judo practice was Sunday mornings. Altarap and Rene F. Cornel were part of that group. As far as can be determined, this was the first batch to whom Prologo Sensei taught Aikido to.

The group had to move another time when a conflict within the Paglaum venue ensued. Prologo Sensei and his loyal students took the mat with them when they left Paglaum, the mat being that of the Caltex Judo group. Altarap could no longer remember the exact year but he believes it was around 1976 when the group transferred to St. Joseph High School (SJHS). 1976 is near, if not, the exact date of transfer considering that during a conversation, Jun Torres, a member of Prologo Sensei's group, stated that when he returned to Bacolod in 1978, Prologo Sensei's group was no longer at the Paglaum Sports Complex; in its place was the Paglaum Judo Club.

By this time, Prologo Sensei was already using the name Shinsei Judo Club (SJC) for his group. Available data as of press time could not confirm if the name has been used when they were still in Paglaum or the name Paglaum Judo Club was used then. Prologo Sensei explained to the pioneer students of his Shinsei Aikido Society (SAS) back in 1995 that Shinsei means “traditional.” Prologo Sensei continued teaching his Aikido to his students, among them Victorio C. Perez back in 1985.

From 1978-1979, Prologo Sensei was employed by AG&P in Kuwait as a pipefitter foreman. In 1980, he worked as a machinist for the Arabian American Oil Company (Aramco) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). He held on to the job for 4 years. Aramco is the state-owned national oil company of KSA headquartered in Dhahran . It is the largest oil corporation in the world with the largest proven crude oil reserves and production. Upon his return to Bacolod City in 1984, Prologo Sensei continued the Shinsei Judo Club (SJC) at the YMCA-Negros Occidental, along Burgos St., Bacolod City.

Meanwhile, Rene F. Cornel, who had his basic Aikido training under Prologo Sensei, traveled to Iloilo to meet Valencia Sensei and later to Manila to train in a crash course under Philippine Aikido pioneer Ernesto “Enie” Talag Sensei, then Chief Instructor of the Ki Society of the Philippines (KISOPHIL). Talag Sensei named him KISOPHIL representative for Bacolod City. Cornel Sensei organized the Ki Society of Negros Occidental (KISONO) in the late 1980’s. Cornel Sensei was the first Aikido student of Prologo Sensei to form his own organization.

In the summer of 1995, Prologo Sensei called for a meeting to revive his group but this time a separate group was formed for Judo and another for Aikido. The groups were called YMCA Judo and Sports Club (YJSC) and the Shinsei Aikido Society (SAS). Judo was taught by Prologo Sensei’s brother, George P. Prologo, 1st Dan Black Belt PAJA, and at some points, by Rene F. Cornel Sensei, 1st Dan Black Belt PAJA. Aikido was taught by Prologo Sensei.

The Shinsei Aikido Society (SAS) was started by Prologo Sensei in his house at Cordova with five students: Hope Canlas, P/Sgt. Vic Dueñas, Edgar Go, Rose “Pangging” Margarejo, and Winston Que. But soon practice had to be moved to the YMCA because of space constraints.

In around April 1995, training for the first batch of students of Shinsei Aikido Society (SAS) officially started. The first batch of students included Narciso “Hansy” L. Alojado, Hope Canlas, Noel and Noemi "Mimi" Chua, P/Sgt. Vic Dueñas, Nick Flores, Edgar Go, Philip S. Go, Romulo Lorenzo, Rose “Pangging” Margarejo, Naomi Prologo, Winston Que, judoka Romer, Fred Sapa, Combat Aikido blue belt William Sia, James U. Sy Jr., Junifer Valdeviso, and Jimmy Zalderiaga among others. Alojado was the group’s Charter President. More students joined in the years to come, like Jacqueline Doromal (1996) and Sahlee E. Magsipoc (now Vallagomesa) (1997).

Later members included Roberto A. Alaban Jr. (B: 1962, later Founder of satori Dojo in Victorias), Roland "Boy" Alvarez, then Councilor Atty. Juanito Amihan Jr., Michael Buenaventura, Joeffrey S. Deriada of the Lapu-Lapu Viñas Arnis Aficionados Association (LVAAA), Filomeno Fernandez, John Paul Gonzaga (JP), Cheeney Limuaco, Goki Limuaco, Richard "Bebing" Limuaco, Judo pioneer Atty. Romeo Natino, Poleen B. Natino, Stamen B. Natino, Moises “Jung-Jung” Nifras Jr. of Taekwondo, Jonald “Jojo” Palomar (B: 1969), and Mary Jane Sykay among others.

Instrumental in the establishment of SAS also were the priests who supported the movement. Among them were Fr. Jerson Balitor (D: 2010), who included the SAS in his Martial Arts Association for People’s Integrity Negros (MAAPIN), Fr. Alcuizar, Fr. Mao Buenafe, Fr. Kune Jaranilla, and Fr. Ciano.

During the later half of the 1990s, Stella Fuentes of Aikido Philippines joined practice with the SAS as she was preparing for her yudansah "black belt (Nihonggo)” examinations in Manila. Later, she and her brother, Noel "Nonong" Fuentes, from time to time would join practice at SAS in the spirit of camaraderie even when they had already established their Kyokan Dojo, which was affiliated with Aikido Philippines, in Homesite, Bacolod City.

Part IV: The Final Years

In 1996, Alojado founded the University of St. La Salle (USLS) Judo Club with Patrico “Pat” P. Prologo Sensei as the Chief Instructor. Cornel Sensei taught the Judo class while Prologo Sensei handled the Aikido class. Alojado, who was connected with the Center for La Sallian Ministries (CELAM), recruited students from the Integrated School (IS) to form the group. The group remained active for about a year.

Meanwhile, at around this time, Felix Altarap was also maintaining a Judo/Aikido/Arnis group at St. Joseph High School, which came to be known as the St. Joseph Martial Arts Club sometime in 2003 or earlier.

On April 20, 1997, Patrico “Pat” P. Prologo Sensei, 2nd Dan Black Belt PAJA, gave out the first ranking promotions for SAS members. At that time the highest rank he has bestowed was 1st Kyu Brown Belt, which Alojado and Sy received. In the later half of 1997, SAS transferred its training venue from the YMCA to the Limuaco Residence in Brgy. Villamonte, Bacolod City through the kindness of Richard "Bebing" Limuaco. Sy, who had trained with Rolando "Bong" Achas Sensei in Quezon City at the recommendation of Prologo Sensei, served as Prologo Sensei’s primary uke “receiver (Nihonggo)” in the most part of 1997 up to 1999.

After two seminars by Achas Sensei in 1998 in Bacolod, the Shinsei Aikido Society (SAS) started adopting certain weapon-based techniques of Nishio-style Aikido into its repertoire. However, Prologo Sensei gave more emphasis in transmitting the techniques he had learned from his teacher, Anong Javellana Sensei, which his students used during randori "sparring (Nihonggo)." Prologo Sensei's SAS remained to be independent.

In 1999, Alojado and Sy, together with Perez, asked permission from Prologo Sensei to separate and set up their own group, the USLS Aikido Club (the newly revived USLS Judo Club) and the Ryu Aikidokan, which they affiliated with Dangayan Singkaw-Aikido Shinzui Group of R. Jun Batobalani Shihan, 6th Dan Aikikai, and where they later earned their yudansha "black belt (Nihonggo)" rank in Aikido. The group maintained cordial relationship with Prologo Sensei’s SAS.

In 2000, Shinsei Aikido Society (SAS) transferred its training venue at the acupuncture clinic of Roland "Boy" Alvarez at 2nd Floor Benjie’s Bldg., along Gatuslao St., in front of the Bacolod City Public Plaza. The group again transferred to the Eagle’s Gym at the WSC Bldg., San Sebastian St. in around 2003. When Eagle’s Gym transferred to Araneta St., SAS training was also relocated there. The latest transfer was to the MMB Dance Studio in front of Lopue’s San Sebastian, along Araneta St.

During the early to mid 2000’s, Prologo Sensei issued a number of Black Belt club recognitions under Shinsei Aikido Society (SAS) to later generations of SAS practitioners. When Prologo Sensei finally retired from teaching in 2008, four of his black belts took over the teaching functions of the club. These individuals were Jhun Montemayor, Roger Rey Lucena, Bernie Belen, and Jonald "Jojo" Palomar. Anggo and Karlo Ybesate are also active.

In 2007, Prologo Sensei experienced paralysis of his left hand and in 2009 was a hospital outpatient. Doctors diagnosed him as having low calcium and potassium. His family cared for him all these years up to the time he passed away.

Prologo Sensei's wife remembers him as a loving husband, a responsible father, a helpful neighbor, and a compassionate and dedicated martial artist. His children describe him as a very patient man who lighten things up with his humor and he always see to it that he is there when his family needs him and his family is always cared for.

Among his children, Prologo Sensei taught his Philippine Dynamic Arnis to both his youngest daughters, Ma. Kristine Prologo and Naomi Prologo-Braza, but it was only Naomi who also studied Aikido and Judo under him.

Prologo Sensei was featured in the documentary “Stickfighters of Buenos Aires” by W.G. Productions and Art Vision which aired over at Negros Progress Channel 17, through the help of Fr. Gerson Balitor. There he demonstrated his interpretation of the Aikido jo “short staff (Nihonggo)” and the basic strikes of his Philippine Dynamic Arnis System.

Prologo Sensei was first brought to the public attention when Sy featured him as an Aikido pioneer in Bacolod in his documentary article “What is Aikido?” which was published in a February 1998 issue of Sun Star Bacolod.

Alojado, wrote a piece about Prologo Sensei entitled “Sensei Pat Prologo: Surmounting the Odds with Aikido” in the Vol. 11 No. 1 issue of the Rapid Journal, the one and only martial arts magazine in the Philippines, based in Binondo, Manila.

Memorials for Prologo Sensei was also psoted by Alojado and Sy at http://visayanfilipinomartialarts.blogspot.com to permanently record his contributions and legacy to the world of martial arts.

At the time of his death, Prologo Sensei held a 2nd Dan Black Belt in both Judo and Karate. He has been recognized as the Founder/Grandmaster of Prologo Style Traditional Philippine Dynamic Arnis System by the Conceptual Martial Arts Society (CMAS), Inc. of Founders/Masters James U. Sy Jr. and Narciso “Hansy” L. Alojado, both 4th Degree Black Belt, through the authority of the group’s Council of Elders represented by Grandmaster Benefredo “Bebing” M. Lobrido of Bago City, 1st Generation Inheritor of Original Filipino Tapado, and Grandmaster Elmer V. Montoyo of Bacolod City, 8th Dan Red Belt Tang Soo Do, Founder of Filipino Tang Soo Do.

Patricio "Pat" Prologo sensei was finally laid to rest on July 14, 2010, Wednesday at the Rolling Hills Memorial Park Cemetery, Burgos Avenue, Bacolod City.

In Memory of Sensei Pat Prologo (1936-2010)

Sensei Pat Prologo died in his sleep on July 2, 2010. This article is in memory of our teacher in Aikido and Arnis.

(This is a reprint of Mr. Narciso (Hansy) L. Alojado's article entitled "SENSEI PAT PROLOGO: SURMOUNTING THE ODDS WITH AIKIDO" in Rapid Journal Vol. 13 No. 1 - 2008)

The last time we visited Sensei Pat Prologo, the headmaster of Shinsei Aikido Society, was when he was suffering from Parkinson's disease (A chronic progressive neurological disease chiefly of later life that is linked to decreased dopamine production in the substantia nigra and is marked especially by tremor of resting muscles, rigidity, slowness of movement, impaired balance, and a shuffling gait.) We were surprised that he is still teaching basic traditional Aikido. In fact, we even helped him tie his belt. His hands were trembling as we tied his belt. He claims that his disease was a result of too much sparring in arnis (which I doubt). But anyway, he also said that if he will not keep on practicing , the trembling of his hands and feet would not stop.

I met Sensei Pat Prologo, when I enrolled my son in the training school of his late brother George Prologo's Judo at YMCA building. It was in the summer of 1995 when I brought my son to be enrolled in Judo. There I met Sensei Pat and he invited me to a meeting that was the beginning/revival of his Aikido School. We met later to revive the club that was inactive for the past couple of years.

The original club was a judo club in 1986 that was founded by the late (Sensei) Rene Cornel, George Prologo, Rudy Vivero and the present headmaster, Senseir Pat Prologo. Their orientation was in Judo because most of them were Judo practitioners since 1960. Sensei Pat (as his students call him) acquired his judo skills while he was still in college. It was in 1960 that Sensei Pat then a working student in Caltex Bacolod organized the Caltex Bacolod Judo Club. Their instructor at that time was Ignacio Ibisa. At that time the club was already a member of PAJA (Philippine Amateur Judo Association).

On of their technical advisers in Judo in 1963 was the late Anong Javellana. Anong was the best frined of Mr. Vivencio Ticao, 86 years old, one of the founders of PAJA when they were college students at MAPUA University. Mr. Ticao and Anong Javellana both studied and participated in Judo tournaments sponsored by PAJA. In fact it was Mr Ticao who was instrumental in introducing Aikido to Mr. Anong Javellana. When Mr. Ticao returned from Guam where he studied Aikido under the umbrella organization of Koichi Tohei, he introduced Aikido to Mr. Anong Javellan who appreciated it very much because it wa somewhat the same as Goshin Jutsu, a Kodokan self defense kata. Mr. Anong Javellana being a Bagoeño was also an expert in arnis/baston/escrima.

Sensei Pat's aikido was greatly influenced by the teachings of Ben Ticao and Anong Javellana. He still uses the traditional way of teaching aikido
