UFC Heavy Champ Ill By: James U. Sy Jr.


The Scheduled title defense of 6’3”, 300-lbs. Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) champion Brock Edward Lesnar (B: 1977) against Shane Carwin on November 21, 2009 will be postponed with no clear new date yet. The champ is sick.

This was revealed by UFC President Dana White shortly after UFC 105 “Couture VS Vera” last November 14, 2009 in Manchester, England.

No specific have been given as to what is the champ’s illness. The UFC previously announced that Lesnar was suffering from mononucleosis but as it turned out that the sickness is more serious than that. Lesnar specified though that it is not cancer or AIDS. Lesnar reportedly had minor surgery last November 10, 2009 in Bismarck, N.D.

Lesnar started his fighting career in Amateur Wrestling, placing 2nd in 1999 and winning the National Collegiate Athletic Association ( NCAA) Championship at the University of Minnesota in 2000. He ranked the #1 heavyweight in the Big Ten Conference, also in 2000.

From Amateur wrestling, Lesnar shifted to Professional Wrestling. He joined the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), where he became a 3 time champion and the youngest to hold the title that point in time. He was also the 2002 King of the Ring and the winner of the 2003 WWE Royal Rumble.

In 2004, he left WWE. The following year, he returned to Professional Wrestling via the New Japan Pro Wrestling and won the IWGP Heavyweight title in a three-way match on October 8, 2005 in the Tokyo Dome by pinning Masahiro Chono. Thiis made him one of a few American wrestlers to have held the title. He made a successful defense of his crown against former IWGP heavyweight champion Shinsuke Nakamura on January 4, 2006, former Sumo grand champion Akebono on March 19, 2006 at the Sumo Hall, and New Japan Cup winner Giant Bernard on May 3, 2006 in Fukuoka. He was stripped of the title in July 2006.

Lesnar made his Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) debut on June 2, 2007 at the K-1 Dynamite!! USA where he submitted Min Soo Kim due to strikes in 1:09 of the 1st round. He trained with Minnesota Martial Arts Academy under Greg Nelson, and University of Minnesota Assistant Head wrestling coach Marty Morgan for the fight.

Lesnar made his octagon debut at UFC 81: Breaking Point, where he initially dominated then UFC heavyweight champion, Frank Mir before being caught in a kneebar, forcing him to tap at 1:30 of the 1st round. Since then Lesnar won his next three fights against Heath Herring on August 9, 2008 (UFC 87), Randy Couture on November 15, 2008 (UFC 91) via 2nd round TKO, and Frank Mir on July 11, 2009 (UFC 100) via 2nd round TKO. He captured the UFC heavyweight title in his fight with Couture and the undisputed crown with Mir. Lesnar now has an MMA record of 4-1.

Lesnar is the second man in Nevada's combat sports history to wear4XL gloves, next to Choi Hong-Man. He is married to former WWE star Sable.
