Three Arnis players of the District IV Arnis Team used Oido de Caburata techniques to win and be declared champions in their respective categories during the Bago City Division Athletic Meet, Elementary Level last September 30, 2010 in Bago City, Negros Occidental.
The gold medalists were Juan Miguel Alisaje, Christile Joy Landero, and Vanessa Torrecarrion. Others who fought for the team were Carlos Miguel Alisaje, Kim Angela Calpa, Karlos Enrique Duyo, Daphy Andrea Escara, Arvin Josh Gonzaga, Raymark Magallon, Kaye Grace Sanchez, and Christian Angelo Saquian.
All the players of the District IV Arnis Team under the leadership of District IV Supervisor Rutchillo Ducay were sourced from the Ma-ao Elementary School Arnis Team under Principal Meriam C. Banas and Sports Coordinator Janet Gubaton, after they were declared winner at the District Meet when no other teams fielded entries.
Trainors for the players were Grandmasters Abraham and Sabas T. Gubaton of the Ma-ao based Oido de Caburata Arnis Group (ODCA). The children’s intensive training lasted for about a month, starting in August 2010.
The Ma-ao medalists will join the winners from Bago to represent the city in the upcoming Area Meet. But meanwhile, the kids will continue their training in Oido de Caburata Arnis, a system of Arnis which traces its roots to the late Founder/Grandmaster Antonio “ToƱing” Tolosa. GM Gubaton’s Oido was polished by his uncle, GM Tolosa.
